Chateau Teyssier 2018

฿2,250.00

Château Teyssier rests in one of the most privileged terroirs of Bordeaux and without a doubt one of the most acclaimed wine regions in the entire world. This Château is right in the heart of Saint-Emilion Grand Cru and just over 3 miles from the famous Saint-Emilion’s First Classified Château Angelus, a wine that can be found at more than $300/bottle (depending on the vintage.)

Nonetheless, Château Teyssier is much more than a privileged terroir. This estate is one of the oldest and most prosperous Châteaux in the area dating back to the 18th century; and in fact, in the 19th century, it was the largest wine producer on the Right Bank.

Jonathan Maltus a.k.a “the cult winemaker” is the owner and mastermind behind Château Teyssier. Jonathan is a Rockstar in the wine industry, who also produces high-end, award-winning wines like Chateau Le Dome (compare at $200/btl), Le Carre, Les Asteries, and Vieux Chateau Mazerat in Bordeaux, as well as Worlds End in Napa Valley. But geniuses don’t work alone, Jonathan has as his right-hand man, and wine consultant, none other than Gilles Pauquet, Château Cheval Blanc’s former winemaker.

Everything in Château Teyssier screams greatness. The vineyard is made up of more than 120 acres, which are mostly planted with the queen grapes of the Right Bank, Merlot, and Cab Franc. And since the year 2000, the vinification area and cellar have been renovated and modernized with state-of-the-art technology and managed with the highest quality standards.

2018 was an outstanding year for Saint-Emilión. Vinous Media blessed this vintage with a 96-point review, stating that “The 2018 Right Bank wines are opulent, flamboyant reds. It is a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic.”

Big and rich, this balanced and accessible wine is generous both with its black fruits and smooth texture. The density and core of tannins do not detract from the full, fruity character. The wine will develop quickly. Drink from 2023. Roger Voss

Grape Variety

A Bordeaux Blend, at its most basic, is any combination of those grape varieties typically used to make the red wines of Bordeaux. The phrase, which seems to have originated with British wine merchants in the 19th Century, relates as much to wines made from the blend as to the grape variety combination itself.

Red Bordeaux Blends are known for their powerful structure and deep flavors. Dark fruits and berries such as plum and blackcurrant are commonly used to describe the flavors of red Bordeaux, although there is an unlimited range of terms that have been ascribed to them. Tannins tend to be relatively high in these wines, giving them a firm structure.

St.Emilion

St.Emilion is an appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) for wine in the Bordeaux wine region of France, where it is situated in the Libourne subregion on the right bank of the Dordogne. Saint-Émilion is registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The wines of Saint-Émilion are typically blended from different grape varieties, the three main ones being Merlot (60% of the blend), Cabernet Franc (nearly 30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (around 10%).
